Freelance editors and translators

Paid, project-based work on our author services.

The work

We keep a small panel of freelance specialists and send work out as it comes in. It is project-based and irregular rather than a fixed commitment, and it is paid per project at a rate agreed before you start.

  • English language editing — grammar, clarity and readability for authors writing in English as an additional language, particularly in medicine and the life sciences.
  • Formatting to journal style — reformatting finished manuscripts to a target journal's instructions, including reference styles and declaration sections.
  • Figure and table preparation — redrawing figures to publication quality from data the author supplies.
  • Arabic–English translation — scholarly translation in either direction, with academic and medical terminology.

What we ask

  • Demonstrable experience in the work you are applying for, with samples
  • A subject background that lets you edit technical text without changing its meaning
  • Reliability on agreed deadlines, and early notice if a deadline is at risk
  • Confidentiality: unpublished manuscripts are not shared, reused, or put into generative AI tools
  • That you work within the limits of the service — editors improve expression; they do not write content, invent results, add citations, or paraphrase text to lower a similarity score

We normally ask shortlisted applicants to complete a short paid sample edit before adding them to the panel.

What we do not recruit for

We do not take on writers to produce theses, dissertations, synopses, proposals or manuscripts for clients, and we do not take on paraphrasers. If that is the work you are looking for, we are not the right place.

We also do not recruit reviewers through this route — peer review is unpaid and separate. See become a reviewer.

Separation from editorial

Freelancers work on author services only. They have no role in editorial decisions at any of our journals, and are not told the outcome of any manuscript they have worked on.
